~のは~だ

It's X that's Y

About

The 〜のは〜だ pattern is used when the speaker wants to emphasize a particular piece of information (following は). This pattern often translates to "It's X that is Y".

E.g. このピザをいたのはマイクです。 "It was Mike who made this pizza."

The 〜のは〜だ pattern is most commonly used to give information that the speaker thinks is surprising/goes against expectations or to provide a reason for something.

~のは~だ may also connect to a second clause, in which case で (the て form of だ) is used.

E.g. まれたのは日本にほん、そのあとはずっとイギリスにんでいます。 "I was born in Japan, and I've been living in England ever since."

のは can directly follow verbs/い-adjectives, or attach to nouns/な-adjectives using な.
