~おきに・~たびに: Every time (vs ごとに)

Introduction

Because I'm all-knowing and can read your mind, I know that another "every" grammar point was just what you wanted. No?

Something must be wrong with my mind-readomatic 3000...


~おきに: Like ~ごとに, but more "oki" and less "goto"

    Example:
    いっげつおきにはらいます。
    "I pay every other month.”

~おきに is a slippery little piece of grammar, that hides some bulky rules behind a cute and simple exterior. But don't worry, as usual, I'm here to help demystify all of the... mystical stuff.

~おきに's Big, Intervallic Issue

The first thing you should know is that ~おきに derives from the verb く("to place"). This is about to become extremely important, even though this grammar is pretty much never written in its kanji form.
