Introduction

This lesson is all about doing things "immediately" or "right away", so let's get into things... right away!

ただちに: At once, your majesty!

ただちに is a formal adverb that is used to say that something will be done "immediately", "as soon as possible", or "right away". You'll find it written in both its kana and kanji forms, so be ready for either!

First, we'll go through several examples of ただちに in context, and then we'll compare it to some of its adverb cousins.

1.1

ただちに手術しゅじゅつ必要ひつようです。

Due to ただちに's formal tone, you can imagine this sentence in a medical setting, perhaps a doctor speaking to their patients, or some similar situation.
