それぞれ can function as either an adverb, or a noun, and can generally be translated to "each".
It's similar to some words you may already know, like たくさん that can be used in two ways:
① 人がたくさんいた
and
② たくさんの人がいた
If you've really been paying attention, you might be saying: "Hey! That's a so-called の-adjective, isn't it???" To which I say, well... yes, but remember, a "の-adjective" is just a way to categorize a noun that happens to be able to modify a verb/adjective using の. There's nothing all too special about it,... and you'll find that それぞれ is no different.
