~がたい: Hard to do stuff

Introduction

I know what you're thinking, "Another "hard to do X" lesson???". But don't worry, I promise there are some key differences between this "hard to do" grammar point, and the ones you've learned previously.

At least, I'm pretty sure there are...


~がたい: Hard to see how this one's going to be any different, to be honest...

    Stem form verbがたい
    Example:
    しんがたいかもしれないけど、それは事実じじつだ。
    "It might be hard to believe, but that's the truth.”

「がたい」 is actually its own little い-adjective that we can attach as a suffix to the stem form of verbs. ~がたい is formal/written in tone, and what's more, it also has a kanji form! However, although it can be written as がたい (yep, the same kanji as むずかしい), when it attaches to verb stems it's nearly always kana.
