This is a classic が sentence. Why? Because it’s answering a question. More specifically, it’s answering a who question. You haven’t learned だれ, the “who” of Japanese, yet, but when you do, you’ll also learn that が is an essential part of asking who went where and also what kind of ice cream they like (yum).
