Welcome to the Fledgling Forest

Introduction

Hello, and welcome to the Fledgling Forest (Elementary) region!

If you’re coming from the Isle of New Beginnings (Absolute Beginner), congrats! Learning the kana is an awesome first step, and now you’re ready to start exploring Japanese for real.

On this island, you’ll cover the Japanese language’s most essential grammar points, kanji, and vocabulary. Fledgling Forest includes 158 unique grammar points, around 325 kanji, and some 1200 vocab! With all that in your toolkit, you’ll be ready to tackle reading, listening, and speaking basic Japanese, and be totally prepared for the N5 level of the JLPT.

Tips and Tricks for Studying with MaruMori!

Tiles

In the adventure regions, you'll find four different types of tiles, each indicated by a unique color:

  Grammar/cultural articles (blue)

• 

  Reading exercises (red)

• 

  Kanji/vocab unlocks (purple)

• 

  Drills (green)

Once you head back to the map, you’ll see that the first tile is a vocabulary and kanji unlock. Hit unlock to add these items to your SRS lessons. When you’re ready, you can navigate to your home page, do your lessons, and then start reviewing + mastering them!

The next tile you see will be red, which indicates a reading exercise! These use the kanji and vocab you just unlocked, so we recommend taking a glance at it to see what you can expect, and then coming back to it once you’ve drilled those items a bit. In the meantime, go ahead and advance to the blue, grammar lesson tiles, and get your grammar on!

At the end of each grammar lesson is a “Mark as done” button. Hit this to gain XP, and unlock each lesson’s grammar points. You can then review these in your grammar SRS so that all that grammar goodness sticks with you!

Pacing

MaruMori doesn't lock your progress, so you're free to study as much or as little as you'd like!

That being said, in order to avoid burnout, for most users, we recommend completing one Adventure Tile per day, as well as 10 SRS lessons, and any reviews you have in your review queue.

SRS lessons/reviews

You'll unlock new kanji/vocab SRS lessons via the Kanji/vocab unlock tiles, and grammar SRS lessons via Grammar articles. You can then access both via your home page, here:
