Many new (SRS) features and improvements!

It's time for yet another update! This time we really tried to focus on getting smaller but high-priority features and improvements in there. So without further ado, let's jump in!

New Features

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - The styling for the questions has changed. We've been working on making it more clear as to what we want you to answer. Based on feedback (thanks!) we've changed the primary color for "Meaning" questions to dark yellow and added labels right above the input. Here's how they look now:

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - You might also have noticed that the top screenshot now shows a kanji form under the kana prompt. This has been added to make it clear which vocabulary we want you to answer when reviewing a kana-only word but there are multiple words with the same kana reading (looking at you やさしい!).

  • b

Conjugation Trainer - The conjugation drills have also gotten some styling and layout changes to easier to figure out the prompt:

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Lightning mode has been added! You can toggle this on or off during the lessons quiz or review session and it will automatically skip to the next question if you answer correctly. If not, it will show the backside. You can enable it by tapping the lightning icon in the top right:

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Speaking of showing the backside, we now have a mistake delay! This means that when you make a mistake, the system prevents you for about half a second from hitting enter again and accidentally advancing to the next card. Hopefully resulting in fewer typos being marked as done by accident!

  • b

SRS Lessons - The circles at the top are now clickable to go back or forth to the corresponding lesson.

Bugfixes:

  • b

Overworld - Maru will no longer jump all over the place and swim with the fishes after a reload on Firefox.

  • b

Dictionary - SRS Statistics - These will now correctly load for vocabulary (forms).

  • b

Dictionary - SRS Statistics - No more infinity % correct!

  • b

Grammar Lessons - Fixed an issue where you could sometimes scroll horizontally

  • b

Grammar Lessons - Clicking "next lesson" should now correctly scroll your page to the top of the next lesson.

  • b

Notifications - Changelog/System notifications will now cause the red dot to appear at the bell in the navbar.

  • b

Dark Theme - Modals - The popup modals have been given a different background overlay to make them stand out more against the content behind them.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Kanji - Fixed an issue where the incorrect readings would be highlighted in the "used in" section.

  • b

Comments & Notifications - These should now properly display custom user avatars.

Pfew, quite a bunch! We've also got our onboarding system pretty much ready to go and are laying the final touches on the first Premade Study Lists. Next to that we've also set our sights on finally implementing the level & experience system to give some extra feedback on your progression.

Phase 1 is quickly coming to a close and we're very much looking forward to starting work on the Sentence Database, Grammar Database, and Grammar SRS!

Animation Performance Improvements (plus no-audio-on-iOS fix!)

Hi all! A slim but very important update today:

We've redone the animations on all adventure pages. This should lead to much better performance on all devices, with mobile devices in particular. Another side effect is that we've been able to restore some of the animations in Lower-Intermediate to their former glory, as we had to cut some out to get better performance.

This should also solve the issue of audio refusing to play on iOS after navigating back and forth to the adventure regions and grammar lessons a few times. This too was caused by the animation library we used, but have now completely removed from the website 🎉

Aside from this, we've also sneaked in a few general bugfixes:

Bugfixes

  • b

Kana Drills - Replaced the audio for か and ăČ

  • b

Settings - Social Links - Kitsun link button will no longer get removed by some overzealous ad-blockers.

  • b

Notifications & Comments - Timestamps should now display the correct time (e.g. a few seconds ago).

  • b

Kana Drills - Fixed an issue where you could click on the correct answer multiple times and increase the correct count by doing so.

Conjugation drills & 14 new levels! Practice your new conjugation knowledge!

Hello! We've got a significant new feature coming out today and coming with it are a few new levels and achievements!

Introducing the Conjugation Drills!

Perfect for really getting used to conjugating Japanese verbs and adjectives. The new drills can be found throughout the various adventure regions (14 new levels in total, typically after learning a new conjugation form) or on the Tools page.

When you go to the conjugation drills from the tools page, you will see many options to choose from:

You can create any combination you want, as long as there are available "questions" for it. Let's say you wish to focus on the polite past negative progressive form for う-verbs. You can do that! Or let's say you want to do one huge training session containing all forms, tenses, moods, formality levels, and parts of speech. You can do that too!

Some conjugation forms haven't even been discussed yet in our lessons, but we've included them anyways so you can already get familiar with them if you wish!

Entering a session will typically look like this:

You can see that we'll prompt you with a verb/adjective and ask you for the same verb in the target conjugation (the colored tags below the input). If you get it wrong, don't sweat it! If you enter a wrong answer, a hint will pop up and let you try again. You have 3 hints (and 3 chances) before it gets marked as wrong.

The drill finishes once you answer all questions correctly. The amount of questions you will get is also tweakable (the most right now is 2563!! đŸ˜±) by inputting the number of items you want per selected part of speech (say, focus on 1 う-verb only, but with all conjugations possible).

This is our first step to creating more grammar-related exercises for you, to really test you on your newly acquired knowledge from the grammar lessons. In the future (Phase 2!) we will also start introducing Grammar SRS to help you really stick your new knowledge. More on that later! For now, we hope you enjoy using this new tool!

P.s. You might want to take a look at the achievements page to check out some new achievements that you can now unlock through doing these drills 👀

New Lower Intermediate Lessons & a ton of bugfixes!

Guess what? It's Tuesday! That means there's a new batch of Lower Intermediate content ready for you!

Enjoy 5 new grammar lessons, 1 unlocks batch, and 1 reading exercise 🎉

In the last new grammar lesson, you learn about the "Potential Form". This also coincides with us releasing the conjugation drills later this week. So keep an eye out for an additional level popping up soon that will take you to the conjugation drill to really cement that newly acquired potential-form knowledge!

Of course, we also managed to fix a lot of bugs in the past week. Here they are:

Bugfixes

  • b

Audio - Example Sentence audio should now start a lot faster than before! The caching was not working properly, but this has been fixed.

  • b

Home & Study Lists - Fixed an issue with incorrect lesson counts on the home and study list overview pages. This typically occurred after doing a known vocabulary/kanji import.

  • b

Notifications - Notifications and Achievement Modals will now always disappear and not throw any error messages upon clicking them away. We've also added some additional safeguards to prevent duplicate notifications from popping up upon navigating toward a different screen.

  • b

Billing - Fixed an issue where the Purchase Complete screen would sometimes not show any text.

  • b

Dictionary - Fixed an issue where you could not suspend Vocabulary on the dictionary pages.

  • b

Notifications - Fixed an issue where deleted replies to your comment (on grammar lessons) would cause your notifications to bug out.

  • b

Manage List Items - The checkbox to select all items should now work again.

  • b

Comments - It's no longer possible to accidentally post the same comment twice.

  • b

Stories - Publishing your personal story no longer visually overrides another user's published story.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Suspending an item while on the back side, will now properly skip to the front side of the next item.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Fixed an issue where suspending items would sometimes cause the done counts to be off (and sometimes break the page).

  • b

Notifications - Notifications will no longer visually overlap with Achievement Modals.

  • b

Comments - Fixed an issue where liking and unliking a comment repeatedly could keep triggering an achievement modal for the author of the comment.

  • b

Reading Exercises - "Back to Adventure" now correctly takes you to the region you were in, rather than the overworld.

  • b

Changelog - Fixed a small styling issue.

  • b

Grammar Lessons & Reading Exercises - The title is now white rather than black in dark mode.

Keep an eye out for the conjugation drills coming very soon!

On a side note, for the unlucky few experiencing performance issues (and audio issues on iOS) for the adventure pages, please know that it is our top priority at the moment. We're working on a solution as we speak!

Importing known items, generating study lists, unsuspending items, new level navigation and more!

Hey all!

We've got an exciting and huge new update for you! Filled with some much-requested and anticipated functionality! Let's get into it:

New Features

  • b

Known Items Import - You can now import your known vocabulary and kanji! Importing it as known will automatically suspend all the matching items throughout the whole MM system. This means that you will never encounter these items in your lessons! See below for an explanation of how to import.

  • b

Study List Import - You can now generate complete Study Lists! Just note down the vocabulary and kanji and your list will automatically get generated!

  • b

Region Levels Navigation - You can now directly navigate to the next level when completing a grammar lesson or reading exercise. Note that for unlock batches and exercises (like kana drills) you still need to go back to the region first. We have plans to change this later on, but it requires a bit more work.

  • b

Unsuspend - You can now unsuspend items from the Manage tab on your Study List Dashboard page.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Spoilers for the other question type are now blurred! Click on them to see the spoiler:

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Kanji - Now shows our main (MaruMori) definition first if available.

  • b

Dictionary - Kanji - Same as above.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Stories - Updated the styling to match the rest of the SRS layouts.

Bugfixes

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Kanji meanings will no longer overflow into stories

  • b

Example Sentence Audio - No longer pronounces the O emoji at the end of the sentence.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Personal Stories / Personal Notes will no longer hide after adjusting one or another.

  • b

Dictionary - Fixed a whole bunch of Kanji variations being merged into one entry. This no longer happens.

  • b

Dictionary - Fixed an issue where Vocabulary would sometimes show the same Kanji (actually a variation of the same Kanji) multiple times as being part of the Vocabulary.

  • b

SRS Lessons & Reviews - Fixed an issue where some definitions would be gone (visually).

  • b

Grammar Lessons - Fixed an issue where Example Sentence audio would not play.

  • b

Statistics - Fixed the Vocabulary JLPT Statistics

  • b

Missing Kana Achievements and Badges - We noticed that nobody gained their kana achievements and badge yet. We've fixed the issue and retroactively given you all your missing achievements and badges!

Pfew! That was quite the update! But we are not done yet! Here's a quick tutorial on how to use the import features:

1. Go to the import page (tools -> imports)

2. Select your import type

2.5. If doing a study list import, select the study list you wish to add the items to, or create a new one right away.

3. Enter your Vocabulary and Kanji. You can use all kinds of different ways to input them. Like:

  • b

    私;私たち;さようăȘら (split by `;`)

  • b

    私,私たち,さようăȘら (split by `,`)

  • b

split by tabs (tsv/copy paste from google sheets/excel)

  • b

    split by enters (new lines)

For Kanji it is even easier, as you do not need to put any delimiters (split characters) in between. Just pasting a list of kanji will work!

One very important thing to note, however, is that you need to specify the form of the vocabulary that you wish to import. This is because in our system you can learn both forms, say かăȘり and 揯ăȘり, separately. If you wish to check which forms we teach, you can do so through the dictionary ("other forms"):

If it can not recognize some of your input, it will let you know which items failed to import:

That's it! Depending on your type of import, your study list items should now be added, a new study list with the items has been created, or all specified items will have been suspended! 🎉
