About

「という」 is a combination of the quote marker と, and the verb う ("to say"). ~という can be used to name, or describe a noun in detail. Whatever という attaches to becomes the descriptor of the following noun.

E.g. リンゴマンという映画えいがってる? "Do you know the movie called Apple Man?"

E.g. ピザをきなだけべれる、というイベントに参加さんかしました。 "I participated in an event where you could eat as much pizza as you like."

~という is often shortened to ~ていう or just ~って in casual speech.

E.g. 最近さいきんHIITって運動うんどうはじめたよ。 "I recently started doing an exercise called "HIIT"."
