About

～につき is a formal grammar pattern with two main usages:

  ① to express the reason for X

  ② to denote the amount of (time, money, etc.) per X noun

Usage ② is commonly used in written contexts, but may also be used in spoken contexts such as announcements/formal explanations, and occasionally in casual conversation.

～につき attaches to nouns, or counters.

E.g. 卵たまごは1人ひとりにつき、2パックまでです。 "Eggs are limited to two packs per person."

E.g. 電気代でんきだいは1ヶ月いっかげつにつき、だいたい9000円えんくらいだ。 "The electricity bill is about 9000 yen per month."

E.g. マルモリベーカリーのポイントカードは、500円えんにつき1ポイントがつく。 "You will get one point for every 500 yen with the MaruMori bakery card."

For usage ②, when used in spoken scenarios, につき may be omitted.

E.g. 卵たまごは1人ひとり、2パックまでです。 "Eggs are limited to two packs per person."

When it comes to "per X" or "for each X", ～につき and the similar grammar ～あたり are essentially interchangeable and the only difference is that につき is more formal in tone
