About
~につき is a formal grammar pattern with two main usages:
① to express the reason for X
② to denote the amount of (time, money, etc.) per X noun
This entry concerns usage ②.
Usage ② is commonly used in written contexts, but may also be used in spoken contexts such as announcements/formal explanations, and occasionally in casual conversation.
~につき attaches to nouns, or counters.
E.g. 卵は1人につき、2パックまでです。 "Eggs are limited to two packs per person."
E.g. 電気代は1ヶ月につき、だいたい9000円くらいだ。 "The electricity bill is about 9000 yen per month."
E.g. マルモリベーカリーのポイントカードは、500円につき1ポイントがつく。 "You will get one point for every 500 yen with the MaruMori bakery card."
For usage ②, when used in spoken scenarios, につき may be omitted.
E.g. 卵は1人、2パックまでです。 "Eggs are limited to two packs per person."
When it comes to "per X" or "for each X", ~につき and the similar grammar ~あたり are essentially interchangeable and the only difference is that につき is more formal in tone
