~みたいだ ("it seems like/looks like...") is casual and indicates a well-informed observation with some amount of reasoning on the part of the speaker. The final だ can become です in polite situations, or be dropped altogether.
~みたいだ can also be used to create comparisons between two things.
E.g. やばいこの風。台風みたいだ!"This wind is crazy. It's like a typhoon!"
~みたいだ can be directly attached to verbs, い-adjectives, な-adjectives, and nouns.
