Aside from expressing "only", だけ has two more advanced usages:

• 

  ① "As Y as you X"

• 

  ② "(～だけしか) "Only X, nothing else"

This entry concerns usage ①.

For usage ①, "As Y as you X", だけ can be combined with potential form verbs, たい form verbs, 〜ほしい statements, and certain な-adjectives.

E.g. できるだけ早はやく作つくってもらえますか。 "Would you please make it as fast as you can?"

E.g. お皿さらはあそこにあるので、必要ひつようなだけ持もっていってください。 "The plates are there, so please take as many as you need."

E.g. テストが終おわったら、好すきなだけ遊あそべる。 "Once my test is done I can play as much as I like."
