~代わりに
Instead of/in exchange for...
About
The ~代わりに pattern can follow any part of speech and has three main usages: "X instead of Y", favors, and "X, but Y". Nouns attach using の and な-adjectives with な.
E.g. バナナの代わりに、りんごを食べる。 "I eat apples instead of bananas."
E.g. 何も言わないから、代わりに宿題やってくれない? "I won't say anything so, in exchange will you do my homework?"
E.g. この仕事は忙しい代わりに、いつも面白い。 "This job is busy, but it's always interesting."
The third example is an example of the "X, but Y" usage, and uses 代わりに to indicate that a positive factor makes up for a negative factor, or that a negative factor outweighs a positive one.
