～代わりに

The ～代かわりに pattern can follow any part of speech and has three main usages: "X instead of Y", favors, and "X, but Y". Nouns attach using の and な-adjectives with な.

E.g. バナナの代かわりに、りんごを食たべる。 "I eat apples instead of bananas."

E.g. 何なにも言いわないから、代かわりに宿題しゅくだいやってくれない？ "I won't say anything so, in exchange will you do my homework?"

E.g. この仕事しごとは忙いそがしい代かわりに、いつも面白おもしろい。 "This job is busy, but it's always interesting."

The third example is an example of the "X, but Y" usage, and uses 代かわりに to indicate that a positive factor makes up for a negative factor, or that a negative factor outweighs a positive one.
