~代わりに

Instead of/in exchange for...

About

The ~わりに pattern can follow any part of speech and has three main usages: "X instead of Y", favors, and "X, but Y". Nouns attach using の and な-adjectives with な.

E.g. バナナのわりに、りんごをべる。 "I eat apples instead of bananas."

E.g. なにわないから、わりに宿題しゅくだいやってくれない? "I won't say anything so, in exchange will you do my homework?"

E.g. この仕事しごといそがしいわりに、いつも面白おもしろい。 "This job is busy, but it's always interesting."

The third example is an example of the "X, but Y" usage, and uses わりに to indicate that a positive factor makes up for a negative factor, or that a negative factor outweighs a positive one.
