~ながらも
Even though...
About
ながら is a particle that is used to express that two things happen simultaneously.
The 〜ながらも pattern is fairly stiff/formal, and employs the も particle to express: "While X state is true, also Y".
〜ながらも can attach to the stem form of verbs, or directly to い-adjectives, な-adjectives, and nouns.
E.g. タバコは体に良くないと知っていながらも、なかなかやめられない。 "While I know that tobacco isn't good for (one's) body, I can't seem to quit."
E.g. マイクさんは、若いながらも、いろいろな経験をしている。 "While Mike is young, he has all sorts of experience."
E.g. りこちゃんは、子供ながらもいろいろなことを知っている。 "Although Rico-chan is a kid, they know all kinds of things."
〜ながらも may also attach to 「(noun/な-adjective) + であり」, the stem form of である, making it a more formal and polite structure.
E.g. ここは、東京都でありながら、自然もたくさんあって良い。 "Although this is (within) Tokyo, it's nice because there's also a lot of nature."
も may sometimes be dropped from ながらも, resulting in a slightly more conversational tone, and removing the "even" nuance.
E.g. 苦手ながら、一生懸命作りました。 "Although I'm not good at (it), I tried my best to make (it)."
〜ながら(も) is used in a large number of set phrases, such as 「残念ながら」.
