About

〜において・における is a formal piece of grammar that functions similarly to the で particle and attaches directly to nouns.

〜において・における is used in three main scenarios: ① to mark the place, or situation where X occurs, ② to mark the time, or time period when X occurs, or ③ to mark a field or an area (e.g. of expertise).

〜において・における is commonly translated to "in/at/during" or "when it comes to/regarding".

〜において is used to connect to a following verb/adjective, while 〜における is used to connect to a following noun.

E.g. 今年ことしのコミコンは幕張まくはりメッセにおいて開催かいさいされます。 "This year's Comic-Con will be held at Makuhari Messe."

E.g. 人生じんせいにおける成功せいこうのカギは何なんだと思おもいますか。 "What do you think is the key to success in life?"
