〜をはじめ

～をはじめ ("Such as/Not only X but Y") is a combination of the を particle and the stem form of the verb 始はじめる "to start; to begin".

The 〜をはじめ pattern is formal, and is used to name one representative in a group, and indicate that it is just one item on a larger list.

E.g. 京都きょうとには伏見ふしみ稲荷いなり神社じんじゃをはじめ、多おおくの観光かんこう名所めいしょがある。 "In Kyoto, there are many famous tourists spots, such as Fushimi Inari."

E.g. しおりさんは読書どくしょが好すきだ。小説しょうせつをはじめ、エッセイ、歴史書れきししょなど、様々さまざまなジャンルのものを読よむ。 "Shiori likes reading. From novels, to essays, to history books, she reads a variety of genres."

E.g. 会議かいぎには社長しゃちょうをはじめ、幹部かんぶも多おおく出席しゅっせきした。 "Many management members, such as the CEO, went to the meeting."

〜をはじめ is commonly combined with とする, and may appear in the following forms: 〜をはじめとする・をはじめとして・をはじめとし.

E.g. ニュージーランドには、マウントクックをはじめとし、たくさんの美うつくしいハイキングルートがある。 "In New Zealand, there are many beautiful hiking routes, such as Mt. Cook."
