すなわち

About

即すなわち is an adverb/conjunction that is used to express "In other words.../That is to say...". Compared to the similar grammar 「つまり」, 即すなわち is more formal.

すなわち can only be used to objectively re-word, or express the essense of something. Unlike つまり, it cannot make subjective statements, or summarize large blocks of information.

E.g. 教育きょういくとは、すなわち教おしえて育そだてるということです。 "Education is essentially the act of teaching and raising."

E.g. 筆者ひっしゃ、すなわち私わたしの意見いけんはこうだ。 "The writer's, that is to say, my opinion, is this..."

E.g. 松本まつもとさんは自営業じえいぎょうだ。すなわち、自分じぶんでビジネスをしている。 "Mr. Matsumoto is self-employed. In other words, he runs his own business."
