N3

〜ている場合じゃない(ているばあいじゃない)

This is no time to be doing ~

About

The ~ている場合ばあいじゃない・ではない pattern is used to express that "Now is not the time to be doing X". It is most commonly used when there is a different, more important thing to be done.

E.g. 昼寝ひるねている場合ばあいじゃないよ。わせは1時いちじじゃなかったの? "Now's not the time to be napping. Weren't you meeting up at 1 o'clock?"

E.g. 親友しんゆう救急車きゅうきゅうしゃ病院びょういんはこばれたと連絡れんらくがあった。カラオケにてる場合ばあいじゃない。 "I just heard that my close friend is being taken to the hospital in an ambulance. Now's not the time to be going to karaoke."

If used aimed at others, ~ている場合ばあいじゃない is quite strong in tone.

~ている場合ばあい can be combined with ではない, or other polite/formal markers, but it remains strong in tone, and should be used sparingly in polite scenarios.

The ~ている場合ばあいか pattern can be used to form a rhetorical question: "Is it really the time to be doing X?". ~ている場合ばあいか is masculine in tone.

E.g. そんなことしている場合ばあい。 "Now's not the time to be doing that, right?"

~ている場合ばあいかよ can also be used, but it sounds stronger in tone, and can potentially be quite rude.
