というより

About

～というより is a combination 「という」 and 「より」, literally meaning "rather than saying X".

～というより is used to express that "X is more accurate than Y", following the pattern "YというよりＸ".

E.g. 見みているというより、それは睨にらんでいるって言いうんじゃない？ "Wouldn't that be "glaring" rather than "looking"?"

E.g. 玉たまねぎは甘あまいというより、どちらかというと辛からい。 "If I had to say which, onions are more spicy than sweet."

～というより may be used in conjunction with むしろ. This creates a more emphatic ～というより statement.

E.g. 疲つかれているというより、むしろ眠ねむい。 "Rather than tired, I'd say I'm sleepy."

E.g. 家いえから出でたくないというよりむしろ、布団ふとんから出でたくない。 "Rather than not leaving the house, I don't want to leave the bed."
