つまり is an adverb that can be used in casual/polite situations to express "That is to say/In other words/Basically/etc.".

つまり can be used to re-word something, get at the gist of something, or to summarize a piece of information/conversation.

E.g. しおりさんは私わたしの叔母おばの娘むすめ、つまり従姉妹いとこです。 "Shiori is my aunt's daughter, or, in other words, my cousin."

E.g. つまり寝坊ねぼうということですね。 "Basically, that means you slept in."

E.g. つまり妊娠にんしんしたってこと？おめでとう！ "Do you mean you're pregnant? Congrats!"

つまり is commonly combined with the explanatory grammar point ～ということ.
