Try to…/be about to…

N3

Try to…/be about to…

About

The ~ようとする pattern combines a volitional form verb with the と particle, and the verb する.

~ようとする can be used to express that either an action is being tried, or that an action is about to happen.

E.g. "The cat is trying to eat my breakfast."

~ようとする is commonly used in the following patterns: ① ~ようとした(が・けど・etc.) "X tried to do Y, but...", ② ~ようと(すれば・したら・すると) "when X tried to do Y, .../if X tries to do Y, .../when X tries to do Y, ...".

E.g. "Today, I tried to get up at six but ended up sleeping until eight."

E.g. "This venue has tight security, so if you try to do something weird, you'll be caught right away."

~ようとする is completely different from ~てみる as the former involves a heavier sense of volition, while the latter is more on simply "trying things out for the first time".
