Nothing more than/a mere...

About

The ~でしかない pattern is used to make statements that lower something's value, degree, or status. (Similarly to "nothing more than X" or "Y is a mere..." in English.)

"Saying "I was planning on doing it later" is nothing more than an excuse."

E.g. "Because of my allergies (lit. for allergic me), even beautiful cherry blossoms are a mere nuisance."

~でしかない is primarily used in negative contexts, but there is a newer slang usage of it that may appear in positive ones:

E.g. "I'm going on an extended vacation to Italy next week! I'm nothing but excited!"

~でしかない is most commonly used in polite/casual spoken scenarios, as well as in written narration or dialogue.
