Despite/in spite of/nevertheless/although ~

About

The ~にもかかわらず pattern is used to indicate that something goes against the speaker's assumptions/expectations, and is often used in conjunction with a statement of criticism or a remark of displeasure/disappointment.

~にもかかわらず is formal/stiff in tone, and is often used in written contexts.

~にもかかわらず can attach to verbs, adjectives, and nouns.

E.g. 目覚めざまし時計どけいを3つセットしたにもかかわらず寝坊ねぼうした。 "Despite the fact that I set three alarms, I still overslept."

E.g. 仕事しごと育児いくじ大変たいへんであるにもかかわらず毎月まいつきかなら旅行りょこうくようだ。 "It seems that they always go travelling each month despite being busy with work and childcare."

にもかかわらず can also come at the start of a sentence, and refers back to something previously stated. それ may also be used, but is optional.

E.g. ダイヤにおおきなみだれがている。にもかかわらずなんのアナウンスもない。 "The schedule is completely out of whack. And yet, there has been no announcement."
