〜のもとで (sometimes, 〜のもとに) is used to say that "X is done under the influence of Y" or that "with X situation/condition, Y is done". 〜のもとで・に can be split into three main usages:
① 「(Noun representing a person) + のもとで」= "Under the influence of X person..." (「〜のもとに」❌)
E.g. マル師匠のもとで修行することになりました。 "I will be training under master Maru."
② 「(Noun representing a situation/condition/system) + のもとで・のもとに」 = "With X situation/under the effects of X condition/under X system..."
E.g. 法のもとに、私たちは平等である。 "We are equal under the law."
③ 「(Name of concept/institution/system/etc.) + のもとで・のもとに」 = "In the name of X..."
E.g. 人間は、開発という名のもとで、木を切り続けてきた。 "Humans have continuously cut down trees in the name of development."
〜のもとで can sometimes appear in kanji as 〜の下で.
