I heard that... or something

About

〜とか at the end of a sentence (or clause) is used to indicate hearsay, and includes the nuance that the speaker isn't too confident that what they're relaying is fact.

Although 〜とか includes a nuance of "or something/but I'm not sure", it is best approximated with a simple "I heard..." in English.

E.g. "I hear that Kazuma's family is super rich."

E.g. "I hear that movie theatre is going under. That's sad if it's true."

〜とか + で can be used in the middle of a sentence to connect a statement of hearsay to a following clause.

E.g. "Apparently Shiori has been busy recently, so I haven't been able to meet up with her at all."

〜とか can combine with the verb う to form the 〜とかいう pattern, which can be approximated as "I heard (someone) say that...".

E.g. "I heard some gossip saying that Maho is going to be quitting the company or something, but is it true?"

〜とか is casual in tone and is most commonly used in conversational contexts. It can be used in conjunction with polite speech as well.

~とか doesn't see much usage in everyday life, and is most common in media such as dramas and anime/manga.
