〜ではあるまいか

About

The ～のではあるまいか pattern is a combination of the の particle, ではある, the まい auxiliary verb, and か.

～のではあるまいか is similar to ～ではないか, and is used to ask (often rhetorical) "Isn't it X?/Won't it Y?" questions.

E.g. やはり、ゆみはマイクのことが好すきなのではあるまいか。 "Could it be that Yumi likes Mike after all?"

E.g. 全まったく反応はんのうがないので、つまらないのではあるまいかと心配しんぱいした。 "There's absolutely no response so I'm worried about if (what I'm saying, etc.) isn't boring."

This pattern can also be used to simply state one's opinion without being too direct:

E.g. チーズの量りょうが足たりなかったのではあるまいか。 "Is it possible that the amount of cheese is insufficient?"

～のではあるまいか can attach to verbs, adjectives, and nouns. Nouns should attach either directly to ではあるまいか or using なの + ではあるまいか.

E.g. もしかしてあの人ひとは学生がくせいではあるまいか。⭕

E.g. もしかしてあの人ひとは学生がくせいなのではあるまいか。⭕
