Polite, past tense marker

The past tense conjugation of です, でした attaches to a noun, な-adjective, or negative ます (polite) form verb. でした also indicates polite language, and nearly always comes at the end of a sentence. でした may occasionally appear in the middle of a sentence when linking two clauses.
でした can be viewed as the polite counterpart of the casual past tense marker, だった. Neither でした nor だった may be paired with い-adjectives.
