~つ
General counter
About
つ is one of many "counters" in Japanese. つ is considered a general, all-purpose counter, and can be used to count many different objects/things.
Although つ simply attaches directly to the number it counts, the overall reading of the compound changes depending on the number:
Number | With つ | Reading |
---|---|---|
One |
Four |
Five |
Six |
Seven |
Eight |
Nine |
Ten |
つ may only be used up to nine, with 10 having its own exceptional reading. To count items higher than 10, other counters must be used instead.
