The word ください comes from the verb 下さる, a polite version of くれる ("to give (me)"). ください is a general purpose "please", and can be written in either kana or kanji.
ください's kanji form should be used when requesting that something be given to you. ください's kana form should be used when you are requesting that someone else should do a given action.
Compared to other polite words of request, ください may be seen as slightly direct, as it sounds like "Please give me...".
ください may follow a て form verb, or a noun + the を particle.
