Introduction

Welcome! This lesson is going to be a (perhaps welcome) break from all the compound verb shenanigans I've been pushing on you for the past few lessons. But don't let your guard down! This point deserves all of your attention too...

(〜から)〜にかけて: I'm gonna be playing video games until around next week

構成こうせい

  • b

    (から)〜(noun)にかけて......
    Example:
    明日あしたから来週らいしゅう土曜日どようびにかけてはたらきます。
"I'll be working from tomorrow until next Saturday.”

So first things first, 〜から〜にかけて is very similar to 〜から〜まで: they both express "from X until/to Y". The big difference is that 〜から〜まで generally has clearly defined start and end points. (With an obvious exception being if we were to combine them with other grammar like だいたい, or ごろ.) In contrast, 〜から〜にかけて provides more of an approximate "from, to" statement.
