だって Part One: Emphatic Quoting with ~んだって

adept #110
~ 5 Minutes

Introduction

Hey! I heard you liked grammar!

I also heard that Mike's friend's friend's friend is having an affair!!!

In this lesson, which is part one of our two-part 「だって」 extravaganza, you'll learn a new way to express hearsay or things that you read from somewhere! Leggo!

~(な)んだって: I heard/it says (something exciting hopefully)

構成こうせい

  • b

    Statement(な)んだって
    Example:
    → バナナの値段ねだんがるんだって
"Apparently the price of bananas is going up!”

First up, is the ~んだって pattern, which combines the explanatory の (usually in its spoken 「ん」 form, since だって is spoken and casual in tone as well) with だ, and って, the casual quote marker.
