〜ことに: To my (surprise; frustration; etc.)

Introduction

Yesterday I went into my favorite bakery, and to my surprise, they were out of satsumaimo croissants! Then, I went home, and to my horror, I was out of toilet paper!

Yup, you guessed it: this lesson's all about how to say "to my (surprise; horror; etc.)".


〜ことに: Big emotions! Big feels!

    Example:
    おどろいたことに小野おのさんまでてくれました。
    "Surprisingly, even Mr. Ono came.

〜ことに is a useful piece of grammar that's all about adding a bit of oomph to statements of emotion. So instead of just saying "I was surprised", you'll now be able to say "I was quite surprised" or "to my surprise". ... Okay, it's not that big of a difference.
