If only everything could be resolved through a nice cup of tea and some biscuits. And if only you were able to express that in Japanese!
Well, "if only" no more, dear user. After reading this lesson, that particular issue will be resolved. (No, not the one about tea and biscuits, sorry.)
て form verb/い-adjective(くて)/noun(で)すむ
Example:
→ 警察に脅されたけど、結局1000円払って済んだ。
"(We) were threatened by the police, but in the end, everything was resolved by (us) paying 1000 yen.”
The ~て済む pattern is a combo of a て form verb/い-adjective or 「noun + で」, and the verb 済む ("to finish; to end; to be completed"). By using this pattern, we can express "X is enough/sufficient", or that "some situation/action is resolved by way of X", with "X" being the verb/い-adjective/noun followed by 済む.
