~ことになっている: The "has been decided" lesson

adept #173
~ 5 Minutes

Introduction

Hello!

This lesson should be mostly a review, as it really only adds a bit of spice to a grammar pattern you learned back in the Depths of Devotion. Let's get into it!

~ことになっている: The way things are

構成こうせい

  • b

    Present tense casual form verbことになっている

  • b

    ~てもいいことになっている
    Example:
    金曜日きんようび私服しふくてもいいことになっている
"(You) may wear plain clothes on Fridays.”

Back in the Depths of Devotion, you learned all about how we can express decisions using ~にする and ~になる. Hopefully, you remember that ~になる is specifically for decisions made by someone other than the speaker. We also built upon ~になる by adding こと to form ~ことになる, which we can attach to verbs to say that "X action has been decided".
