  Example:

  "Apparently, they wrote that book based on their own life.”

Overview

The ～をもとに(して) pattern is used to describe that something was made/written/formed/etc. based on X noun. ～をもとに(して) is used for newly created things, and indicates that they were made with inspiration from the attached noun. Note that this is "new" as in, something that does not copy the source material; something fresh!
