apprentice #104
~ 5 Minutes

Introduction

Oops! I did it again... But also I'm kinda stoked about it.

Have you ever wanted to say that kinda thing before, but just couldn't find the words in English? Have you ever wanted to express that an action has been completed and that you're a bit upset about it, without changing your tone of voice or crying like a big baby? Or maybe you wanted to egg your friends on to do something stupid! If so, it's your lucky day, because you'll be learning exactly how to do all of that in this lesson! ...In Japanese, of course.

~てしまう: Regret, but also YOLO

Structure

  • b

    て form verbしまう
    Example:
    べてしまった。 😬
    ”I ate it.”

Today's grammar structure involves combining a て form verb with the verb しまう ("to finish; to complete"). Since it's being attached to another verb, we know this usage of しまう is as an auxiliary verb

(okay, you got me, it's technically a "subsidiary" verb, but who's counting).
