Today's lesson is going to be all about starting things. We'll be expressing "started..." using the stem form
The "stem" of a verb, made by conjugating a verb to its ます-form and removing ます (e.g. {食|た}べる → {食|た}べます → {食|た}べ).
Verb stem始める
Example:
→ ギターを練習し始めた。
”I started practicing the guitar."
First up, we have ~始める, which simply means "to start/to begin". 始める can be written in either kanji or kana, and you can combine this with any verb stem, as long as it's an action that can be started (so verbs like いる・ある are out). Let's see some examples:
