はじめる・~す: Starting out

Today's lesson is going to be all about starting things. We'll be expressing "started..." using the stem form

of verbs, so make sure you're all refreshed on that before we move forward. Good to go? Sweet!

① ~はじめる

Structure

    Verb stemはじめる
    Example:
    → ギターを練習れんしゅうはじめた
    ”I started practicing the guitar."

First up, we have ~はじめる, which simply means "to start/to begin". はじめる can be written in either kanji or kana, and you can combine this with any verb stem, as long as it's an action that can be started (so verbs like いる・ある are out). Let's see some examples:
