I must confess, 〜直なおす doesn't necessarily have anything to do with physically repairing things. Instead, it expresses that an action is done again, only this time, in a more better way better way. Oops, had to 書かき直なおす that last bit.

If you look at the dictionary definition of 直なおす, you'll see that in addition to "to repair" it also means "to correct" and "to put right". These are the main meanings we'll be dealing with today.
