と・って: Quoting

elementary #60
~ 5 Minutes

Introduction

Today, we’ll be learning quotes. No, not quotes from Shakespeare or famous Japanese writers. We’ll be learning how to quote someone! Basically, we’re learning how to express what someone said. For example, things like “Maru said that she wants to eat Japanese food!”

But first, we need to learn how quotations work! Quoting in Japanese might seem a bit different than what you’re used to but the logic is similar to how it’s done in English. To make this a smooth ride, we’ll first go through how it’s done in English and then transition right into Japanese. Sound good? Awesome!

Who Said What Now?

  • b

    QuoteSpeech Verb (e.g. う, く, おもう, etc.)
    Example:
    → ボブはたいきをべたいいました。
