~てください・~ないでください ”Please/Please Don't"

elementary #75

Introduction

Please read this lesson carefully. Also, please don’t read this lesson carefully. Heh heh. Confused? That’s because today’s lesson is all about politely asking people to do, or not to do something. A couple of useful things to be able to say, wouldn’t you agree? Please agree with me. 🙏

Structure

  • b

    て-form Verbください
    Example:
    → ピザをべてください
    ”Please eat pizza.”

If you take a gander at the structure above, you’ll see that we’re dealing with your standard て-form verb. Later on, we’ll also have everyone’s favorite “without” phrase, ないで. How ないで came to be used to request someone not to do something, as well as for “without doing X”, I am not sure, but the reality of the situation is clear: we gon’ learn both. But let’s tackle the affirmative first.
