〜上うえで is a formal piece of grammar that links two actions and has two main usages: "upon doing X,... Y", or "while doing X,... Y".

🥨 〜上うえで can attach to casual past/present form verbs, or nouns using the の particle.

This entry concerns the "while doing X,... Y" usage:

E.g. 日本語にほんごを勉強べんきょうするうえで大切たいせつなことは何なんですか。 "What is important when studying Japanese?"

E.g. 留学りゅうがくする上うえで、気きをつけなくてはいけない事ことがいくつかあります。 "There are a few things to be careful of when studying abroad."

E.g. 美味おいしいカレーを作つくる上うえでのポイントは、野菜やさいを大おおきく切きる事ことです。 "When making delicious curry, it's important to cut your vegetables into large peices."

Notes:

  The subject of both actions in a 〜上うえで sentence should be the same.

  上うえで should not be used to link together two actions that have an obvious, or unchangeable order.
