～と言ったら

About

というと・といえば・といったら are all combinations of the と quotation marker and conditional forms of the verb 言いう, and have the following usages:

といったら in particular may be used to form "speaking of X"- type sentences:

E.g. 春はるといったら花見はなみだ。 "When I hear spring I think of hanami."

As well as "X makes me think of Y"-type sentences:

E.g. 北海道ほっかいどうといったら、美味おいしい牛乳ぎゅうにゅうを想像そうぞうします。 "Hokkaido" makes me think of (lit. imagine) tasty milk."

～といったら can also be used to mark the topic of discussion, and emphasize how the speaker feels about it:

E.g. 通勤つうきんラッシュの混こみ具合ぐあいといったら、息いきもできないくらいだ。 "When it comes to the state of the rush hour (to work), it's (to the extent) that I can't even breathe."
