そこで is a conjunction that is mainly used in written scenarios, and has two main usages:

• 

  ① "Therefore/as such/so"

• 

  ② "Then/at that time/at that point".

This entry concerns usage ①.

E.g. 電車でんしゃでは間まに合あわなさそうだった。そこでマウンテンバイクで行いきました。 "It didn't seem like we'd make it in time by train. So, we went by mountain bike."

For usage ①, そこで can't connect a "cause" with a "(natural) effect". In other words, the clause following そこで can't contain an involuntary action.

E.g. おじさんからたくさんブルーベリーが届とどきました。そこでお腹なかが空すきました。 ❌ "A bunch of blueberries arrived from my uncle. As such, I became hungry. (Unnatural)"
