Or is it? (Yes it is.)
そこで is a super fun conjunction that is mainly used in written contexts, and has two main uses:
① "Therefore/as such," where we connect a "cause" with the according action taken.
② "Then/at that time," where we connect event "A" with "B" action taken.
These might seem quite similar, but once we dive into each usage, I think you'll find that they're actually quite unique!
Let's kick things off with...
Our first usage places そこで at the start of a sentence, and its main purpose is to say that "X action is taken because of the previously given Y cause". That sounds complex, but it's actually quite simple. For instance:
