It goes without saying

About

うまでもない is similar to "it goes without saying" in English, and has two main uses:

  • b

    ① "It goes without saying, but..." (at the start of a sentence)

  • b

    ② "It goes without saying that X", (at the end/in the middle of a sentence)

For usage ①, うまでもない should be followed by a conjunction expressing "but", such as だが, or けど. ~ことだが・だけど, are also possible.

E.g. うまでもないことだけど、仕事しごとよりも健康けんこうほう大事だいじですよ。 "It goes without saying, but (your) health is more important than (your) work."

For usage ②, うまでもない should be preceded by は, and ~はうまでもない is most often preceded by a nominalized verb/adjective, with ~であることは・~なのは and ~ことは being the most common patterns.

E.g. スティーブがハンサムであることはうまでもない。 "It goes without saying that Steve is handsome.

E.g. その瞬間しゅんかん二人ふたりこいちたことは、うまでもありません。 "It goes without saying that the two fell in love that instant."

For usage ②, ~はうまでもない may also be preceded directly by nouns, or こそあど words such as それ.

E.g. それはうまでもないことだ。 "That goes without saying."
