~わけではない②

X is not completely Y (partial negation)

About

The わけではない grammar point has two main usages: ① clarification, and ② partial negation.

This entry concerns usage ②.

わけではない attaches directly to casual form verbs and い-adjectives, or to な-adjectives/nouns using な・である.

わけではない can also attach to verbs/adjectives/nouns using という. This simply adds additional emphasis.

For usage ②, わけではない is most often used to say that "X is not completely Y" or "that X is not very Y".

E.g. すべてが解決かいけつしたわけではなかった。 "Not everything was resolved."

E.g. すごくむずかしいわけではありません。 "It's not terribly difficult."

E.g. 激痛げきつうっていうわけじゃないけど、昨日きのうからずっといたくてになる。"I wouldn't say it's an intense pain, but it's been bothering me since yesterday."

わけではない is also used to soften following statements of criticism.

E.g. 全部ぜんぶあなたのせいにしようとしているわけではないが、今度こんどけてください。 "I'm not trying to blame everything on you, but please be careful next time."
