〜となると

About

～となると is slightly formal in tone and roughly translates to "if it comes to X/if Y were to be the case" in English.

The ～となると pattern is used to describe that if a given situation becomes X, or changes to Y, Z change will happen. It puts particular emphasis on the resulting change.

～となると may be written as ～となれば・～となったら.

～となると may attach to い-adjectives, verbs, な-adjectives, and nouns.

E.g. 予算よさんを変更へんこうするとなると、チーム編成へんせいから変更へんこうしなくてはいけなくなる。 "If (we) end up changing the budget, we'll have to start by restructuring the team."

E.g. そこまで難むずかしいとなると、小学生しょうがくせいには無理むりだと思おもいます。 "If it were to be that hard, I think it would be too much for an elementary school student."

E.g. 職場しょくばで出会であうのが無理むりとなると、アプリを使つかうしかないかもしれない。 "If people can't meet at work, then they might have no choice but to use apps."
