ある is a verb that expresses existence, and is similar to the English "there is". ある is often combined with the が particle (although は and other particles are possible in the right context), to describe that an inanimate object exists. This means that ある is not used for living things.
The ~がある and 〜はある structure follows nouns.
ある's negative conjugation is ない, its polite conjugation is あります and its polite negative conjugation is ありません.
