いる is a verb that expresses existence, and is similar to the English "there is". いる is often combined with the が particle (although は and other particles are possible in the right context), to describe that an animate object exists. This means that いる is used for living things.
The ~がいる and 〜はいる structure follows nouns.
In some situations, いる may be intentionally used to express the existence of a non-living thing.
いる's negative conjugation is いない, its polite conjugation is います and its polite negative conjugation is いません.
