〜すぎる
Too much
About
The verb すぎる is used to describe something as "too much". To use すぎる, attach it to the stem form of a verb or い-adjective, or directly to a な-adjective.
Dictionary form | Stem form | With すぎる |
---|---|---|
食べる | 食べ | 食べすぎる |
あつい | あつ | あつすぎる |
きれい | N/A | きれいすぎる |
すぎる can also attach to a negative verb or い-adjective (for な-adjectives, use じゃない・ではない). To attach すぎる, replace the い of ない with さ. There is some debate about whether なさ or just さ should be used when ない functions as an auxiliary verb. This is discussed in the main article.
Negative Verb/Adjective | Conjugation | With すぎる |
---|---|---|
食べない | い → さ | 食べなさすぎる |
あつくない | い → さ | あつくなさすぎる |
きれいじゃない | い → さ | きれいじゃなさすぎる |
In casual speech, the final る of すぎる is often dropped.
